Meal Makeover
Help make a difference. . .

Yarra Valley Catering is calling on food businesses to do their bit for the environment and for hungry families.

Spurred on by Leader's Feed Melbourne campaign Yarra Valley Catering owners Andrew Forrer and Rebecca McIntosh are calling on local businesses to donate food that would otherwise go to waste to their charitable meal program.

"We take food that is leftover from our weekend catering events and we cook and package it on a Monday for distribution to families who need assistance," Mr Forrer said.

"Currently we do about 80 meals a week during our peak periods. We would like to do about 200 meals, but we are obviously limited by the amount of food that we have as leftovers," Mr Forrer said the Wesburn- based company did a lot of on-location catering, which meant food storage regulations were strict and only fresh food that had not been used in the meal packages.

"We are really reliant on our busy periods to keep the output up," he said.
"So what we really want is food businesses like butchers, fruit and vegetable shops and supermarkets that can boost the amount of food we have access to."

Mr Forrer said his program serviced the specific needs of the Yarra Valley with meals being distributed through local agencies including the River Valley Church in Millgrove.
Mr Forrer said the program had been running for about a year.
"This is a passion for us and we want to really make a difference in our own community, but we need more people to get behind us."
